The woman who ate men

Dor some time ago, every time a man from the camp went east to hunt by kayak, he never came back. The only one of them to have never ventured there, Kiviuq, was now the sole hunter and had to feed the entire community: women, children, and elders. Although very valiant, he unfortunately could not take on this heavy task alone and his lies began to sink.

One day, taking his courage in both hands, he decided to go in search of his family.
He sailed east for a long time and while maneuvering around an island, he suddenly heard someone calling him:
“Hey man, come closer, come over here!” »
He saw an old woman carrying a child in the back pocket of her coat.
Suspicious, he replied:
“No, I won’t come.
“Come on, come on,” she insisted.
He told himself that he probably didn't risk much against this woman. She seemed harmless: she was alone and carried no weapons. As she insisted, he approached.
“Bring your kayak with you, so it doesn’t drift,” she added.
— No, I won't bring it.
— Come on, bring it. »
And as she insisted, he brought it.
“Empty it now.”
— No, I won't empty it.
—Come on, what, empty it. »
As she insisted, he emptied it.
“Turn your kayak over.
— No, I won't return it.
“Come on, what, turn it around.”
As she insisted, he returned it.
“Put this rock in your kayak so it doesn’t fly away.”
— No, I won't put that stone on it.
— Come on, put this stone on. »
As she insisted, he put it on.
“Now come in and warm up.
— No, I won't come in.
Come on, come into my house. »
As she insisted, he entered.
“Take off your fur clothes.
- No !— Come on, take them off. »
As she insisted, he took them off.
“And now your skin boots, your kamiik.
- No !— Come on, take them off. »
And the man ends up finding himself almost naked.
The woman hung up her clothes and boots to dry.
“But what are we going to feed our guest? » she asked the baby she was carrying on her back.
She cleaned a large tray and went out to get some food.

UOOncelone, Kiviuq looked around and understood with horror that it was she who had killed all his companions. Their remains and the skin of their faces were hung on the walls of the tent and served as decorations.
Moments later, the woman came home with a bag of wild berries. “Go ahead, eat,” she ordered her guest.
The man reached into the bag to help himself but he felt something hard at the bottom. He took it out of the bag and discovered to his disgust that it was a boiled human hand.
“I can’t eat that,” he said.
— But yes, come on, eat, it's delicious with the little berries. »
The man put his hand back into the bag but was careful to choose only the fruit. When evening came, they went to bed.
The man pretended to fall asleep. When he pretended to snore, the woman would reach for his knife, but as soon as he pretended to wake up, he heard the clicking of a metal blade falling to the ground. He resisted sleeping for a long time and the woman finally fell asleep.
Then, without a sound, the man gathered his clothes, put on his kakariki his kayak under his arm, and rushed towards the shore. But, as he ran towards the sea, the woman, awake, came out from under the tent. She chased after him and quickly caught up with him. She had reached the stern of his kayak when he gave his first paddle. The woman fell head-first into the icy water. By the time she got up and regained her senses, the man was already far away.
He paddled with all his might back to the camp without looking back and told his story.
“I know why our hunters disappear when they go east; there is a woman there who devours men. She feeds on their flesh and decorates her tent with their remains! »
The man dreamed all night about the cannibal woman and the next day, at daybreak, he returned to see her, determined to avenge his missing friends.
DAAsoon as he was near the island, the woman called to him as she had done the day before: “Hey man, come closer, come over here! » But he answered him: “It was you who wanted to kill me yesterday.
- No, it's not me. This is the child I carry on my back. But don't worry, I'll stop him this time! Come on! »
But the man replied: “I don't have confidence; And besides, why does the child you carry in your amauti have horrible, long, sharp nails and why does he look at you so strangely? He is scary !»
The woman, terrified, grabbed the child and, without even looking at him, threw him away. He fell into the sea and when he hit the water, his eyebrows turned into blue mussels, his insides into seaweed and his hair into aquatic plants.
The old woman, furious with the hunter, ordered her knife: “Knife, pierce him!” » And immediately, the woman's knife cut through the air towards the hunter. But staying on his guard, he managed to soften the blow. Wounded in the arm, he replied forcefully: “Harpoon, pierce her!” »
His harpoon flew toward the woman who collapsed under the violence of the shock. “Knife, really pierce him this time!” ”, she cried again. The knife hit the man head-on and seriously injured him. But, gathering his strength one last time, he shouted: “May my harpoon pierce you to death!” »
And the woman collapsed. Before succumbing to her wounds, she threw her knife one last time at the man, screaming: “Let him die!” »
But the knife could not reach the hunter because the latter was already far away. Wounded and exhausted, he still found the strength to rejoin his family.
The story ends like this. From that day on, the people of the camp were able to leave towards the east; and come back.
