Snow White

On a mid-winter day, a queen sat at her ebony-framed window and sewed. While pulling the needle, she watched the white flakes fly. She pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell onto the snow. This red on this white had such a beautiful effect that she said to herself: “If only I had a child as white as snow, as pink as blood, as black as the wood of my window!” » Shortly after, a daughter was born to him; she was white as snow, pink as blood and her hair was black as ebony. They called her Snow White.
But the queen died giving birth to him.

After a year, the king married another woman. She was very beautiful, but she was proud and vain and could not suffer anyone to surpass her in beauty. She had a magic mirror. When she looked at herself and said: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country? » The mirror replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful in the country. » And she was happy. She knew the mirror was telling the truth.
Snow White, however, grew taller and became more and more beautiful. When she reached seventeen, she was already prettier than the day and more beautiful than the queen herself. One day she asked the mirror: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country?” » He replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful here, but Snow White is still a thousand times more beautiful. » The queen was terrified. From then on, every time she saw Snow White, her heart turned inside her chest because she felt so much hatred towards her. She had lost rest, day and night.
She called for a hunter and said to him: “Take the child into the forest!” I don't want to see her anymore. Kill her and bring me her lungs and liver as proof of her death. »
The huntsman obeyed and led Snow White into the woods. But when he had drawn his dagger to pierce the innocent heart of the young girl, she began to cry and said: “O, dear hunter, let me live! I will go deep into the forest and never come home. »
The hunter took pity on her and said: “Save yourself, poor child! » But he thought: “The beasts of the forest will soon devour you! » A wild boar was just passing by. The huntsman killed him with his dagger, took his lungs and liver, and brought them to the queen as proof of Snow White's death. The cook was ordered to prepare them and the wicked woman ate them, imagining that they had belonged to Snow White.
The poor little girl was in the middle of the woods, all alone. Her fear was so great that she looked at all the leaves in the forest without knowing what would become of her. She began to run over the sharp stones and through the thorns. The wild beasts leaped around her but did her no harm. She ran until evening, as long as her legs could carry her. She then saw a small house and went inside to rest. Everything in the cottage was tiny, graceful, and clean. There was a small table covered with a white tablecloth, with seven small plates and seven small spoons, seven small fork,s and seven small knives, and also seven small cups. Against the wall, there were seven small beds lined up next to each other and covered with all-white sheets. Snow White was so hungry and thirsty that she took a few vegetables and bread from each plate and drank a drop of wine from each goblet because she didn't want to eat the entire portion of one of the guests. Tired, she then wanted to go to bed. But none of the beds suited him; one was too long, the other too short. She tried them all. The seventh, finally, was his size. She lay down there, confided in God, and fell asleep.
QWhen night had completely fallen, the owners of the house arrived. There were seven dwarves who, in the mountain, worked in the mine. They lit their seven little lamps and when the light illuminated the room, they saw that someone had come there, for nothing was as they had left it.
The first said: “Who sat on my little chair? »
The second: “Who ate from my little plate? »
The third: “Who took off my bread? »
The fourth: “Who ate my vegetables? »
The fifth: “Who used my fork? »
The sixth: “Who cut with my knife? »
The seventh: “Who drank from my goblet? »
The first, turning around, saw that his bed had been disturbed. “Who touched my bed?” » he said. The others came running and everyone cried out: “In mine too, someone has gone to bed!” »
But on the seventh, when he looked at his bed, he saw Snow White sleeping there. He called the others, who came quickly and uttered surprised cries. They took their seven little lamps and lit Snow White's face.
“Lord God!” Lord God! they cried; How pretty this child is! » They were so happy that they did not wake her and let her sleep in the little bed. The seventh of the dwarves slept with his companions, an hour with each, and the night passed like this. In the morning, Snow White woke up. When she saw the seven dwarves, she was frightened. But they looked at her with friendship and were already asking questions: “What is your name?
“My name is Snow White,” she replied.
—How did you come to us? »
She told them that her mother-in-law had wanted to kill her, but that the hunter had spared her life and that she had then run all day until she found this little house. The dwarves said to him: "If you want to take care of our household, cooking, making beds, washing, sewing, and knitting, if you keep everything in order and cleanliness, you will be able to stay with us and you will not lack Nothing.
“Okay, agree with all my heart,” said Snow White. And she stayed with them. She took care of the house. In the morning, the dwarves left for the mountain where they extracted iron and gold; in the evening, they returned and their meal had to be ready. All day the young girl remained alone; the good little dwarves had warned her: “Beware of your mother-in-law! She will soon know you are here; Don't let anyone in! »
The queen, however, after eating Snow White's lungs and liver, imagined that she had once again become the most beautiful of all. She stood in front of her mirror and asked: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country?” » The mirror replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful here. But, beyond the bronze mountains, among the kind little dwarves, Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful. »
The queen was upset; she knew that the mirror could not lie. She understood that the huntsman had deceived her and that Snow White was still alive. She racked her brain to find a new way to kill her because as long as she was not the most beautiful in the country, she knew that jealousy would not give her any rest.
Having finally discovered a ploy, she painted her face and dressed like an old traveling saleswoman. She was unrecognizable.
HASSo disguised, she crossed the seven mountains behind which lived the seven dwarves. She knocked on the door and said: “I have something beautiful, something good to sell, to sell!” » Snow White looked out the window and said: “Hello, dear Madam, what do you have to sell?
“Beautiful, good goods,” she replied, “corselets of all colors.” She showed him a braided one of multicolored silk. “I can let this honest woman in!” » said Snow White to herself. She unlocked the door and bought the pretty corselet.
" Child ! said the old woman. How you do it! Come on, I'll adjust it for you! » Snow White was unsuspecting. She let herself slip into the new corselet. But the old woman squeezed quickly and so hard that the young girl lost her breath and fell as if dead. “And now you have finished being the most beautiful,” said the old woman, running away.
In the evening, a short time later, the seven dwarves returned home. What terror was theirs when they saw their dear Snow White lying on the ground, motionless and lifeless! They lifted her and saw that her corselet was too tight. They quickly cut the cord. The girl began to breathe slowly and, little by little, she came to her senses. When the dwarves heard what had happened, they said: “The old merchant was none other than that disbelieving queen. Be careful not to let anyone in when we're not there! »
The wicked woman, upon her return to the castle, stood in front of her mirror and asked: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country?” » Once again, the mirror responded: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful here. But, beyond the bronze mountains, among the kind little dwarves, Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful. » When the queen heard these words, she was so upset that she felt her heart suffocate. She understood that Snow White had regained life.
" Well ! she said, I will find some way that will make you disappear forever! » Using a witchcraft trick that she knew, she poisoned a comb. She disguised herself again and took on the appearance of another old woman.
So she crossed the seven mountains towards the house of the seven dwarves, knocked on the door, and shouted: “Good goods to sell!” » Snow White looked out the window and said, “Go your way!” I am not allowed to open up to anyone.
“But you can look carefully,” said the old woman, showing him the poisoned comb. I will comb you nicely. »
Poor Snow White didn't suspect anything and let the old woman do her thing; barely had the comb touched her hair when the poison took effect and the young girl fell unconscious.
" And There you go ! said the wicked woman, it's all over with you, a prodigy of beauty! » And she left.
Fortunately, evening came quickly and the seven dwarves returned home.
When they saw Snow White lying as if dead on the ground, they immediately thought of the stepmother, searched, and found the poisoned comb. As soon as they took it out of her hair, Snow White came to her senses and she told them what had happened. They asked him once again to be on guard and not to open the door to anyone.
Returning home, the queen stood in front of her mirror and asked: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country?” » Like the previous time, the mirror replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful here. But, beyond the bronze mountains, among the kind little dwarves, Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful. »
When the queen heard this, she began to tremble with anger. “Snow White must die!” she cried, “even if I perished!” » She went to a dark and isolated room where no one ever went and prepared a poisoned apple. Outwardly she seemed beautiful, white and red, so that she was the envy of anyone who saw her; but it was enough to eat a very small piece to die. When everything was ready, the queen painted her face and disguised herself as a peasant.
HASthus transformed, she crossed the seven mountains to go to the seven dwarves. She knocked on the door. Snow White leaned out of the window and said: “I have no right to let anyone in here; the seven dwarves forbade me.
- All right! replied the peasant woman. I will be able to sell my apples elsewhere, but I'll give you one.
— No, said Snow White, I have no right to accept anything.
—Are you afraid of being poisoned? asked the old woman. Look: I divide the apple in two; you will eat the red half, me, the and white one. »
The apple had been treated with such art that only the red half was poisoned. Snow White looked at the fruit with envy and when she saw that the peasant woman was eating it, she could not resist any longer. She reached out and took the poisoned part of the apple. As soon as she got her teeth into it, she fell dead to the ground.
The queen looked at her with her wicked eyes, sneered, and said: “White as snow, pink as blood, black as ebony! This time, the dwarves won't be able to wake you up! » And when she returned home, she asked the mirror: Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the land? He finally replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful in the country. » And his jealous heart found rest, as far as a jealous heart can find it.
Then, in the evening, the little dwarves arrived home, and they found Snow White lying on the ground, breathless. They lifted her, looked to see if there was anything poisonous, undid her corselet, combed her hair, and washed her with water and wine. But nothing helped: the dear child was dead and dead she remained. They placed her on a stretcher, and the seven of them sat around her and cried for three days. Then they prepared to bury him. But she remained as fresh as a living being and her pretty cheeks were rosy as before. They said: “We cannot put it in the black earth. » They made a transparent glass coffin where she could be seen from all sides, placed her there, and wrote her name on it in gold letters, adding that she was the daughter of a king. They carried the coffin up the mountain and one of them stood guard over it.
For a long time, Snow White remained like this in her coffin, as pretty as ever. It happened that one day a prince who was riding through the forest stopped at the dwarves' house to spend the night. He saw the coffin at the top of the mountain, and the pretty Snow White. He said to the dwarves: “Leave the coffin to me; I will give you what you want. »
But the dwarves replied: “We will not give it to you for all the gold in the world. » He said: “Then give it to me for nothing; because I will no longer be able to live without seeing Snow White; I want to give him honor and respect as my beloved. »
When they heard these words, the good little dwarves were overcome with compassion and gave him the coffin. The prince had it carried on the shoulders of his servants. As they were going like this, one of them tripped over a stump. The shock caused the piece of poisoned apple she had eaten to slip out of Snow White's throat. Then afterward, she opened her eyes, lifted the lid of the coffin, and stood up. She was alive again!
“Lord, where am I? she asked.
“With me,” replied the prince, full of joy. »
He told her what had happened, adding: “I love you more than anything in the world; come with me, you will become my wife. » Snow White agreed. She accompanied him and their wedding was celebrated with magnificence and splendor.
The Evil Queen was also invited to the wedding. After putting on her most beautiful attire, she took her place in front of the mirror and asked: “Mirror, pretty mirror, who is the most beautiful in the country?” » The mirror replied: “Madam Queen, you are the most beautiful here. But the young sovereign is a thousand times more beautiful. » The wicked woman uttered a terrible curse and she was so frightened, so afraid that she lost her mind.
