Chase away the natural

The hare and the monkey were chatting enthusiastically. And, while conversing, each of them gave free rein to their familiar tic. From time to time, the monkey scratched himself with brief paws while the hare, who was constantly afraid of being surprised by some enemy of his species, could not help but at any moment turn his head from time to time. one side, sometimes the other. The two animals could not stay still.

“It’s extraordinary, really,” observed the hare to the monkey, “that you can’t let a minute pass without scratching!”
– It's no more surprising than seeing you constantly turn your head in all directions! replied the monkey.
– Oh, protested the hare, I would know how to stop it if I wanted to!
“Well, let’s see if you can do it.” Let's try, you and I, to stay still. Whoever moves first will have lost their bet.
- Heard ! » said the hare.
And both tried not to make the slightest movement.

It didn't take long for the immobility to seem unbearable to them. The monkey was itching like never before. As for the hare, he was experiencing great anxiety regarding his safety, since he could no longer cast furtive glances at every point on the horizon at any moment.
In the end, no longer able to hold on:
“By the way! he said, our bet does not prevent us from telling ourselves some story to make the timeless long, is it not true, brother monkey?
- Certainly ! » replied the latter, who suspected some stratagem of his friend, and intended to take advantage of it by taking inspiration from the example that the hare was going to give him.
“Well, I’ll start,” said the latter. Imagine that one day in the dry season, finding myself in a vast plain, I ran into the greatest danger... -
Hey, exclaimed the monkey, the same thing happened to me!
- Yes! continued the hare, I saw dogs running towards me, barking. It was coming from all sides to the right!... to the left!... in front of me!... behind me!... I turned in this direction... I heard it this way and then that... and that way again! »
And while speaking, Sir Hare, as if carried away by his story, mimed his worries in this unfortunate situation and looked in all the directions to which he was referring.
The monkey, as soon as the story of the hare was finished, began his story:
“One day,” he said, “I was attacked by a troop of children who chased me with stones. I received it here (he scratched his right side to indicate the place where the blow had struck), there!... (on the left side), on the kidneys, on the thigh, on the back of the neck. » And he indicated each part of the body that he named thus with a hasty gesture which made the urgent itching stop.
The hare could no longer contain his desire to laugh. It burst! And the monkey, seeing him giggle, also laughed with all his heart. “You see, whatever we say and whatever we do, we will never change our nature. The proof has been made and is well done. Let's leave it at that. None of us won the bet, but none of us lost it. »
