The jackal and the hedgehog

Image
The hedgehog had joined forces with the jackal to cultivate.  Nomads one day settled on their land.  When the jackal and the hedgehog went to visit their fields, they found goats grazing on their budding grain. “Friends,” they said to the strangers, “you are doing us wrong!  If God guides you on the right path, get out of our fields! — We won't leave!  » they replied. And then great was the concern of our two friends. The jackal said one day to the hedgehog: “Let's draw lots: whichever of us he chooses will ride on top of the other and we will go and raid the nomads' goats!”  » The hedgehog replied: “Put your trust in God!  » And they drew straws. The lot designated the hedgehog which was thus chosen as a mount.  The jackal threw the saddle on his back but did not know how to mount it because it came to the ground. The hedgehog called out to him: “Why do you want to ride on me,” he said to him, “I’m so small, so short.  The saddle will fit on you...

The wonderful canary

Image
B affo was a poorly behaved-little girl.  She behaved lightly with her comrades and  stubbornly  refused to work.  Furthermore, she could not see an object without touching it. Her parents often punished her, but  it was a wasted effort : she didn't get any for it. One day, at the market, Baffo saw little white canaries.  She took one in the palm of her hand and asked the nearby merchant: “What is the price of this canary?” “I don’t know,” the man replied.  But, anyway, it's not for sale!  » Without  paying attention  to these words, Baffo threw twenty coins to the ground and walked away taking the canary.  “When the merchant returns,” she said to herself, “he will find the money instead of the canary.  » Now these little white canaries were none other than  egrets  which, each market day, transformed themselves to live a little among men. Before Baffo reached his  hut , the canary became an egret again.  Th...

The Brahmin and Goddess Durga

The Brahmin thanked the goddess and hastened to return home.  He was still far from home when he had the idea of trying the earthen pot: he turned it over and immediately came out several donuts, the most beautiful that the Brahmin had ever seen. At midday, being hungry, he prepared to eat his  mud , but as he had not performed his ablutions or said his prayers, he stopped at an inn near which there was a pond.  He entrusted the earthen pot to the innk...

The Golden Fleece

Image
U n day, Zeus made a winged ram appear.  The animal was sacrificed but care was taken to preserve its golden fleece.  It was offered to the king of Colchis who nailed it to a sacred oak, guarded by a dragon.  Many years later, in Thessaly, a young man named Jason claimed the throne that his uncle Pelias had monopolized.  Pelias agreed to return the kingdom, but first Jason had to bring him the golden fleece. Shortly after, the young man boarded a ship, the Argo, heading for Colchis.  When Jason arrived there, he went to the king and asked for the golden fleece.  The king then proposed several tests to him. Fortunately, Jason had enlisted the support of Medea, the king's daughter.  Through her enchantments, the princess allowed her lover to overcome obstacles: taming marvelous bulls, clearing a gigantic field to sow the teeth of a dragon... Finally, she put to sleep the monster who guarded the golden fleece, and Jason had no trouble stealing the treasur...

The blue rose

UA's  young princess possessed all the qualities one could desire.  Her deep blue eyes lit up a lovely face, and everyone admired the way she told stories. His mother had died when he was born, and his father adored him and refused him anything. The princess, however, had one flaw: considering herself a perfect person, she demanded that everything around her be perfect as well.  She didn't hesitate to throw away a cake if the strawberries adorning it weren't all the same size and color! No  suitor found favor in his eyes.  Her father insisted that she get married, but she refused all the young people he introduced to her.  One day when he begged her again, she promised him that she would marry the one who brought her a blue rose. His father was not happy with this decision, because he knew well that blue roses did not exist.  Roses are white, red, pink, or yellow, but never blue! VS Responding to his daughter's demands, he had it announced throughout...

The turtle dove's ring

A young boy named Ségué Karanmbé was a happy  bird catcher .  Every time he went to visit his traps, he found many captured birds there.  He had caught all the species that exist in the world, except a black-throated dove that the Peuhl call  kourkoundourôrou  and the Bambara  call bourountouba-kabouountouba-kanji  dodged all its traps. R intending to capture it by this means, the boy prepared glue with boiled bark of  ficus.  Then he glued all the trees in the country.  The dove, which did not know this trap, went to land on a branch, and its legs were trapped in the  sticky  material. Ségué Karanmbé ran to grab his victim. “Young man,” said the bird to him, “your skill was greater than my distrust, but if you spare my life, I will give you something with which you will be happy, and your father with you, for he will no longer be obliged to go hunting with his dog as he does in all weathers. —And what do you want to give me th...
